Murguma dam: Purulia West Bengal

It is located in the north of Begunkodar within Jhalda Block and is about 55 kms from Purulia town. The dam is on the tributary of Kangsabati river. This is a very good picnic spot. The natural beauty of Ajodhya hill is visible from this point.

Murguma is a small tribal village in Purulia district of West Bengal, India. In local people’s tongue, the word means the home for the peacocks. It is an ideal weekend getaway situated in a beautiful natural environment and pristine landscape. There is a dam on the Saharjor river, which is the prime attraction of this place. Its lake is surrounded by hillocks and forests; all lying near the foothills of the Ajodhya Hills very close to the Begunkoder Village, a well known settlement in Purulia.  Murguma Dam and its neighbouring forests together create a beautiful scene which every year attracts a lot of tourists, gradually taking interest in ecotourism. The dam preserves the water for common people’s use, mostly in the sector of agriculture. Several tribal villages like Mamudi, Leva, Bamni, Lakhipur, Gurabera etc. surround the dam and its residents depend largely on the dam’s water for their daily fare. Apart from spending your time beside the tranquil Muruguma Lake and dam, you can visit the nearby villages, forests and experience the tribal way of living. Nearby attractions include a visit to Kenkechi Hill, Girguri Waterfalls and Ukumburra Hills. (Source: http://purulia.nic.in, http://weekenddestinations.info )
